Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement on the one year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act being signed into law:

“It was one year ago today that history was made.  President Barack Obama signed into law the Affordable Care Act, which expanded health insurance coverage for 32 million Americans.  This legislation put Americans back in control of their health care choices, holds insurance companies accountable, and makes coverage more affordable.  Its enactment meant that small businesses, seniors, young people, and Americans who have been discriminated against by insurance companies will get the relief they need.”

“Within the 11^th Congressional District of New York, the Affordable Care Act improves coverage for 367,000 residents who already have health insurance; extends coverage to 53,500 uninsured residents; gives  premium assistance and tax credits to up to 160,000 families and 11,400 small businesses to help them afford coverage,” added Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke.

“As we move forward to improve access to healthcare, we know that there are many who still want to limit access to healthcare and who do not want to hold insurance companies accountable for discriminating practices.  I believe that access to healthcare is a right and not a privilege.  Know that I will continue to fight to protect Americans’ access to quality and affordable healthcare,” concluded Congresswoman Clarke.
