Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) released the following statement announcing her well wishes and staunch support of the confirmation of Judge Kentaji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to be nominated to serve as U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice.

“There is no doubt Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will uphold justice on the highest court of the land just as she has on every bench she has served on. Judge Jackson understands the power and the effects of law, especially its impact on the most vulnerable. Her background on the DC Circuit bench is not just valuable, it is commendable. And her perspective as a Black woman and a trial judge will serve us all well. I am confident Ketanji Brown Jackson will bring clarity on crucial cases that will serve to strengthen the Supreme Court and uphold the standards by which we live and govern ourselves. She is unquestionably qualified for this appointment and her service will bring about justice, balance and equality to America’s 152 years old institution: The U.S. Supreme Court. Yes, it is certainly time to make room for a Black woman, the backbone of our democracy, to take her seat on the Supreme Court bench, said Congresswoman Clarke.

Clarke added, “Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s background, scholarly and legal acumen is reflective of the hard work, dreams, hopes and the unwavering faith in God of our ancestors. Judge Jackson is not only breaking new grounds, she is empowering the next generations of young women pursuing careers in the legal field and accrediting all those committed to the causes of justice, fairness and equity to usher in a new era where we all benefit from a shared culture and democracy. Her deeds and accomplishments are the monuments that bind one generation to another. And we will all benefit from her eventual confirmation as U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice.”
