U.S. Rep. Yvette D. Clarke’s Statement on December Unemployment Numbers

Today, U.S. Representative Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Labor announcement that 200,000 jobs were added in December and the unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent, its lowest level since February 2009.

“With the announcement that the economy gained 200,000 jobs, it has become evident that we are moving in the right direction.  With these new developments, we must focus on realistic solutions that create lasting job security for the American people.

“We cannot forget that there are still 13 million Americans unemployed.  The unemployment rate for African-Americans rose from 15.5 to 15.8 percent – an appalling statistic that demonstrates the urgency we have in creating more jobs and addressing the equitable distribution of our nation’s resources.

“As we continue to work our way out of the economic downturn, I am confident that America will restore its economic standing in the world.  I call on my Republican colleagues to focus on the economic security of our citizens.  Let us work together to help move America forward.”
