U.S. Rep. Yvette D. Clarke Applauds President Obama’s State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, DC –  U.S. Representative Yvette D. Clarke commended President Obama’s proposals in his State of the Union Address on Tuesday to restore the middle class economy, preserve voting rights, reduce gun violence, reform our immigration and education systems.

President Obama offered plans to prevent illegal sales of firearms, remove assault weapons and high-capacity magazines from our streets, allow undocumented Americans to become citizens, establish tax rates that reward work rather than wealth, increase the minimum wage, rebuild our infrastructure, and provide pre-school to children everywhere in the United States.

“President Obama believes in the American Dream in which every person has an opportunity to participate,” said Representative Clarke. “I share his belief that when we invest in our families and children, when we allow people who work hard to succeed, we will strengthen the foundations of a civil society.”

Representative Clarke, the ranking member of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Security Technologies added that President’s Obama’s Executive Order to expand cooperation between the Department of Defense and private entities to protect information security on the Internet would substantially reduce the threat of an attack by cyberterrorists.

“Attacks on the security of the Internet could undermine our national defense or interfere with our privacy by disclosing personal information,” said Representative Clarke. “President Obama understands that we must eliminate this threat to our nation and ourselves; and I will work with my colleagues in Congress to pass legislation that will empower our government to remedy the vulnerabilities that exists in our infrastructure”

“I renew my commitment to work with President Obama and his Administration to address the interests of the American people through bipartisan collaboration,” concluded Representative Clarke.
