Rep. Clarke’s Statement on the Supreme Court’s Affordable Care Act Ruling
Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Yvette D. Clarke expressed her excitement and overwhelming joy over the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Affordable Care Act. This legislation puts Americans back in control of their health care choices, holds insurance companies accountable, and makes coverage more affordable.
“Today, I am pleased by the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act, which provides coverage to millions of uninsured Americans who have been denied access to medical treatment because of pre-existing medical conditions or rising costs,” stated Representative Clarke.
“As I have said on many occasions, I firmly believe that healthcare is a fundamental human right and not a privilege!” said Rep. Clarke. “The ruling means that small businesses, seniors, young people, and Americans who have been discriminated against by insurance companies will continue to have access to coverage.”
Representative Yvette D. Clarke noted that an analysis done in March 2012 showed that thousands of people in the 11th Congressional District were already benefiting from the Affordable Care Act. The analysis showed that the health care law had already provided:
• 390 small businesses in the district with tax credits to help maintain or expand health care coverage for their employees;
• 5,100 young adults in the district with health insurance;
• 46,000 seniors in the district received Medicare preventive services without paying any co-pays, coinsurance, or deductibles;
• $2.5 million in public health grants had been given to community health centers, hospitals, doctors, and other healthcare providers in the district to improve the community’s health; and
• 23,000 children and 100,000 adults received health insurance that covers preventive services without paying any co-pays, coinsurance, or deductibles.
Under the Affordable Care Act, Americans have already begun to see lower costs and better coverage. “This is a triumphant day for America, however, despite today’s historic ruling, there are many opponents who are determined to have this law repealed. It is imperative that we preserve this victory for the American people,” concluded Representative Clarke.
