Rep. Clarke Votes No on FISA

H.R. 6304, the FISA Amendments Act of 2008.  Below is her statement regarding the vote.

“FISA has been a highly important law for thirty years, providing tools to our nation’s intelligence agencies that have helped keep America safe since 1978.  While advances in technology, such as the invention of cell phones and the Internet, require the original law to be updated to remain effective, this bill is far overreaching and tears apart civil liberties that Americans have relied on.  I am further concerned that by not holding the telecom companies accountable, Congress is creating a precedent under which we will see the creation of a system that uses the private sector as a defacto spying agency for the government.”
