Free Citizenship Application Assistance At Medgar Evers-Black Star News

Medgar Evers College, in conjunction with The City University of New York, New York CARIB News, and special guest speaker Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke, invites the community to Citizenship Now! – a U.S. citizenship application assistance event to be held on Saturday, November 21.

The event runs from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Medgar Evers College Cafeteria,  1150 Carroll Street between Rogers and Nostrand Aves.,  Brooklyn, NY 11225.

This event is free and open to the public.

Medgar Evers College has a history of tackling citizen issues. Under the auspices of the Center for Law and Social Justice, an immigration program provides free legal services to the residents seeking counsel on immigration matters. The Center has additionally hosted events such as its Forum on Immigration, to further educate and empower the community.

At the Citizenship Now! event, experienced lawyers and immigration professionals will help participants evaluate their readiness to apply for citizenship.  Basic eligibility requirements to be met, include:  residency in the United States as a permanent resident for five years (three years if living with and married to the same U.S. citizen);  physical presence in the United States for half of the five- or three-year period; and,  applicant must be at least 18 years of age.

Additional factors may affect eligibility.

All participants are asked to bring the following documentation:  Green Card;  all passports since obtaining a Green Card; and home addresses for the last five or three years.  In addition, bring the following information if applicable: marital history;  children’s information (date of birth, addresses);  criminal history; and employment history (past five or three years).  Note: the USCIS requires a $675 filing fee–participants do not have to bring the fee to the event.

Medgar Evers College was founded in 1969 through the efforts from educators and community leaders in central Brooklyn. The College is named after Medgar Wiley Evers, a Mississippi-born black civil rights activist who was assassinated on June 12, 1963.
