Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke’s Statement on the Sean Bell Settlement
Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement on the City of New York’s announcement to pay an estimated $7 million settlement in the Sean Bell case:
“While money cannot change the fate of that horrible night, the $7 million settlement will hopefully give some solace to Sean Bell’s children and loved ones. I commend Sean’s family and friends for never giving up on their quest for justice.
“Unfortunately, the Sean Bell case is yet another example of how some bad actors have tarnished the legacy of one of our nation’s finest police departments. While the New York City Police Department has been a national leader on critical counter terrorism and homeland security matters, these excessive force cases, along with egregious policies such as Stop and Frisk, have tainted the NYPD’s image. It is clear that Commissioner Kelly must work with our local community leaders to review current NYPD community policing procedures and develop common sense reforms.”
