Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke’s Statement on the Passing of Barbados Prime Minister David Thompson

Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement on the passing of Barbados Prime Minister David Thompson:

“I extend my condolences to the family of Prime Minister David Thompson. You are in the thoughts and prayers of many around the world. Know that we stand with you and the people of Barbados as you go through this time of mourning and transition.

“Prime Minister Thompson has demonstrated great leadership among the CARICOM nations, and has tirelessly worked to further the advancement of the region. Unfortunately, at the young age of 48, he leaves behind his wife Mara and three daughters.

“Today, Prime Minister Thompson’s attorney general and deputy, Freundel Stuart, was appointed as the new prime minister by Barbados. As a Representative of one of the most diverse districts in the United States, which consist of a large Caribbean immigrant population, I know the importance of maintaining a strong dialogue with our neighbors in the Caribbean. I encourage Mr. Stuart to stay strong as he works to lead this nation through this trying time.”
