Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke’s Statement on Haiti’s Newly Appointed Prime Minister Garry Conille

Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement regarding Haiti’s Senate approval of Dr. Garry Conille as the new Prime Minister of Haiti:

“Yesterday, Haiti’s Senate approved Dr. Garry Conille, a United Nations Development expert, as Prime Minister.  Solidifying the Haitian government is a major step in making Haiti a stronger partner in the recovery process.  With this transition, I urge President Martelly and the Haitian government to unite to improve economic development, rebuild vital infrastructure, strengthen its educational system, and create the jobs that will sustain the future of Haiti.

“Since the 2010 earthquake, Haiti has struggled to fully implement an effective and efficient long-term recovery strategy.  With the lingering cholera epidemic, which has exacerbated the deplorable conditions of many still living in IDP camps, it is important that this government establish itself to better secure Haitians and their collective future.

“I congratulate the Haitian Government for taking this important step in naming the new Prime Minister.  Again, I encourage the leadership to create and foster initiatives that will stabilize the economy, leverage the nation’s entrepreneurial spirit, and enable the people to prosper.  As a U.S. Representative of the second largest population of first and second generation Haitian immigrants, I will continue to work with my colleagues and the Haitian Diaspora to help  Haiti fully recovery.”
