WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement marking the eighteenth anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act.

“Millions of women across this nation are often victims of abuse. It is our responsibility to pass legislation that will protect our mothers, daughters, and sisters regardless of ethnicity, sexuality, or legal status,” stated Representative Yvette D. Clarke. “Since the passage of the Violence Against Women Act, eighteen years ago, countless lives have been saved through support programs and stricter laws passed in several states.

“This legislation recognizes the rights of women everywhere who do not deserve to live in fear, and serves as a model for other nations to ensure the rights and freedoms of women globally,” concluded Representative Clarke.
