Rep. Yvette D. Clarke’s Statement on the Resignation of Rep. Anthony Weiner

Washington, DC- Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement on the resignation of U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner:

“I humbly respect the decision of Rep. Anthony Weiner from New York’s 9th Congressional District to resign from office.  Undoubtedly, the circumstances surrounding his departure are unfortunate, however, I strongly believe it was and continues to be a personal matter that he and his family are addressing.  Throughout his tenure in Congress, Representative Weiner has been a fierce and loyal advocate on behalf of his constituents.  Congressman Weiner’s leadership has always made him stand out in the New York Delegation.

“I will always be grateful that during the time of my election to Congress in 2006, Congressman Weiner was the only person in the New York Congressional Delegation to stand with me and support my bid for Congress.  Despite these circumstances, I am hopeful, in the future, he will continue to be a strong, effective and progressive leader.  As a dear colleague and friend, I wish Representative Weiner and his family the best in the future, now in the days ahead.”
