Rep. Yvette D. Clarke’s Statement on the Passing of Betty Ford
Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement on the passing of Betty Ford, the wife of our nation’s 38th President Gerald Ford:
“On behalf of myself and the residents of the 11th Congressional District, I’d like to express my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of former First Lady Betty Ford. Her role in American history and American politics will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of a grateful nation.
“First Lady Ford skillfully fashioned the space in our civil society to provide treatment for those who suffer from substance abuse. She also was a strong advocate for the health and well-being of women across the nation. Her compassionate gestures extended through the lens of her personal circumstances and as a result, we have all become beneficiaries of her compassion and legacy.
“The strong support she demonstrated for her husband, former President Gerald Ford as he took the helm of the nation after the resignation of former President Richard Nixon, clearly illustrated her devotion to our country. Her presence helped him restore the image of the White House in the wake of the Watergate scandal.
“She was a great public servant and a candid, forthright advocate who added new depth and dimension to the definition of a First Lady. While she will be sorely missed, let us continue to celebrate her compassion and legacy.”
