Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement after reports indicated that Congressman Edolphus “Ed” Towns has decided not to seek re-election and will retire at the end of the 112th session of Congress:

“Congressman Ed Towns has served the 10^th Congressional District of New York for fifteen terms, and has done so with distinction.  For nearly three decades, he has fought for New Yorkers and all Americans to have access to affordable healthcare, employment opportunities, and has been a champion for the people he represents.  He rose through the ranks of Congress to “hold the gavel” as Chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

“It is an honor to serve with him in the New York City delegation, and as a colleague, we frequently collaborated as advocates for the communities of Central Brooklyn.  His fortitude, perseverance, and tireless fight for justice will serve as a firm foundation for the public servants who will succeed him.  I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served with him, applaud him for his service and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
