Rep. Clarke’s Statement on the 107th Anniversary of Panama’s Independence
Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement in honor of the 107th Anniversary of Panama’s Independence:
“I am proud today to celebrate the 107th Anniversary of Panama’s Independence from Colombia. This truly marks an important event in history that should be proudly celebrated by the people of Panama and as well as by individuals of Panamanian descent.
“Brooklyn is an amazing community due to its rich mosaic of diverse cultures. Today, as we commemorate Panama’s 107th anniversary of independence, we also celebrate the contributions of the Panamanian-American community, both here in New York and throughout the United States. For Panamanians and those of Panamanian descent, today is a joyous occasion to celebrate their heritage and share their culture with others. I also have a personal connection to the Panamanian-American community. My father, an immigrant from Jamaica, has Panamanian roots.
“As a daughter of the Caribbean, I know how important it is that we continue to strengthen our mutually beneficial relationship with all the Caribbean nations. Congratulations to Panama as they celebrate the 107th anniversary of their independence. I look forward to celebrating many more.”
