Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke’s Statement on the Death of Journalist Gil Noble

Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement regarding the death of legendary journalist Gil Noble:

“Gil Noble was a pioneer in journalism who overcame many barriers for African Americans in that profession.  His legacy as a reporter, host and anchor at WABC-TV will be remembered by those who knew him and his work.  I am saddened by the news of his death and my heart and prayers are with his family.

“Gil Noble faced incredible pressure from the media establishment as one of the few African American reporters on mainstream television in the late sixties.  However, despite the burden placed on his shoulders, he surpassed expectations again and again, quickly becoming a respected leader in the field.  He will be remembered for his ambitious programming that offered stories that were too often overlooked by the mainstream media.  His most notable work at WABC-TV, as the host of Like It Is, made him a widely recognized source of news and commentary.  He undoubtedly established a precedent that prepared the way for the next generation of journalist.”
