Congresswoman Clarke Commends Enrollment in Health Insurance Marketplaces

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement on the figures released on Wednesday indicating that 3.3 million Americans have enrolled in plans in the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance marketplaces, with more than 1.1 million people enrolled in January alone.

In New York State, more than 250,000 people have enrolled in New York State of Health, a marketplace that offers insurance plans which are substantially less expensive – but much more comprehensive – than the plans that were previously available.

“The health care marketplaces are working because men and women in every state want to have access to comprehensive, affordable health insurance,” said Congresswoman Clarke. “Finally, Americans have real choices in health care, choices that had previously been unavailable to millions of people who could not afford to buy the insurance their families need.”

The premiums for health insurance plans available through New York State of Health cost – on average – fifty-three percent less than the premiums for individual plans purchased last year.  Most of the people (about three-fourths) who enroll in these plans are also eligible for financial assistance.
