Clarke Statement on Death of Woman Aboard American Airlines Flight

U.S. Representative Yvette D. Clarke (NY-11) released the following statement regarding the death of a constituent in route from Haiti to New York via American Airlines.

“My sincere heartfelt condolences go out to the Desir-Fontus-Oliver family for the loss of your precious loved-one Ms. Carine Desir.  Ms. Desir was a valued member of our community and will be greatly missed.

“I am extremely troubled by the reports and information that has been made public thus far.  The initial hesitancy and poor response provided to Ms. Desir by airline personnel is simply unacceptable.  Even more incomprehensible are the questions surrounding the operability or inoperability of the medical equipment on board.

“To provide the family a sense of closure as well as a clear understanding of the policies and procedures surrounding this type of occurrence, I am calling on the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct a thorough and complete investigation of the equipment and personnel response on American Airlines Flight # 896.”
