Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09), First Vice-Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, released the below statement on the Biden-Harris Administration issuing its new Executive Order on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence:
“I commend the Administration for issuing this landmark Executive Order to ensure that America is a global leader in AI by prioritizing innovation and competition while also emphasizing new standards for equity and civil rights and mitigating threats posed by misinformation and disinformation. This comprehensive strategy not only represents a whole-of-government approach to promote the responsible development and governance of AI, but also lays the groundwork for Congress to act on legislation to provide the necessary resources and authorities,” said Rep. Clarke.
“I am also pleased to see the Administration’s attention to advancing equity and civil rights, which coincides with my work on algorithmic discrimination, including my bill, the Algorithmic Accountability Act. AI systems use algorithms that routinely make decisions about insurance, housing, employment, health care, banking, and policing, and yet biases are deeply embedded within many of these systems. I believe bias in AI will be the civil rights issue of our time, and I look forward to continuing to work with the Administration and our private sector partners to ensure equity and inclusion are baked into new technologies of the future.”
