Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09), Senior Member of the Committee on Homeland Security and the Committee on Energy and Commerce, issued the following statement regarding new AI guidelines set by the Department of Homeland Security: 

“The Department of Homeland Security’s new directive released today continues the Biden-Harris Administration’s ambitious approach to the responsible use of artificial intelligence, and I commend Secretary Mayorkas for leading this important effort.

Updating federal government procurement policies is a prime example of how the federal government can help incentivize the private sector towards the development and use of responsible and safe AI. For years, we have seen the unintended and harmful consequences from the use of AI, particularly when it comes to bias, discrimination, and lack of explainability. And it is all too important that our federal government works to keep pace with the rapid development of emerging technologies, while also ensuring the protection of the privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties that are enshrined within our Constitution. 

I applaud the Biden-Harris Administration’s continued commitment to managing the risks and harnessing the benefits of AI, and I look forward to working with my partners in the Executive Branch and across the aisle to protect our nation and the rights and safety of all Americans.”
