Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) issued the following statement regarding Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s decision to step down from Democratic House leadership in the 118th Congress:

“What is there to say of the immaculate record, character, and spirit of our great Speaker of the House, the honorable and incomparable Nancy Pelosi, that has yet to be said? Throughout her 35 years of service in the House of Representatives and seven years as America’s first and only female Speaker of the House, Speaker Pelosi persisted as a proud advocate for change and a compassionate champion of the most underserved and neglected peoples of our nation and world. From the revolutionary healthcare reform within the Affordable Care Act, to the vital provisions of the American Rescue Plan, to her impossibly courageous stance as democracy’s last line of defense against brutal seditionists, Speaker Pelosi never failed to fight for the nation she holds so dearly to her heart. Indeed, Speaker Pelosi’s name is indelibly entwined with her many profound achievements and triumphs. Make no mistake: history will never forget that when men sat and waited, Nancy Pelosi stood and led,” said Congresswoman Yvette D.
