In commemoration of the 35^th Anniversary of Title IX, Rep. Yvette D. Clarke member of the House Education and Labor Committee recognizes the significance of the passage of Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972. 

Title IX states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”  Contrary to popular belief, Title IX does not only apply to athletes.  This amendment applies to any educational program that receives money from the federal government. 

Rep. Clarke stated, “The passage of Title IX has allowed girls women a seat at what was far too often a male dominated table.  It has paved the way for many girls and women who would otherwise be left out.  Our communities have been enriched because of amendments such as this.”

Rep. Clarke continues to be a strong supporter of women and women’s issues.  She is a supporter of H. Res. 406, which celebrates the accomplishments of Title IX.  The resolution also recognizes the need to continue the goal of equal opportunities for women and girls.
