BROOKLYN, NY – Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) issued the following statement:

“Today, I join my fellow New Yorkers in expressing my deep condolences to the family and loved ones of New York Police Department Officer Didarul Islam, as well as to each of our Bangladeshi neighbors who are mourning the loss of a true community hero. Officer Islam’s story was not unlike that of many New Yorkers across our city. He migrated to this nation in search of opportunity and possibility, found work serving his city, and raised a family he cherished with all his heart. He was a good man who exemplified everything an officer of the NYPD should aspire to be, and his passing in the line of duty during Monday’s senseless mass shooting is a tragedy in every sense of the word. My heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to his expecting wife, their two young children, and the entire Bangladeshi-American Community in this time of terrible grief,” said Congresswoman Clarke.
