WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representative Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) issued the following statement:
“Representative Andy Ogles and his Republican colleagues’ attacks against Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani are ugly in every sense of the word, and unbecoming of any moral person – let alone a Member of Congress. Despicably, rather than reject these vile actions with the unequivocal condemnation they deserve, the Republican Party to this point has all but accepted them. Indeed, behavior that has no place in a civil world has reclaimed its home in the halls of Congress, and my colleagues across the aisle who celebrate this atrocious bigotry outnumber those who condemn it.
“To endorse the denaturalization and deportation of an elected American citizen on no basis but his being a Muslim man is repugnant behavior that can and will put innocent lives in harm’s way. That is the purpose of casual bigotry such as this – to inflame hatred towards Muslims in this country and across the world. In every corner of this nation, our millions of Muslim American neighbors are making our communities stronger. Islamophobia shouted proudly exposes nothing but the white supremacist’s total lack of human decency and deep depravity.
“Weeks ago, this country witnessed a sickening act of political violence against Minnesota lawmakers and their families. Extremism is a danger to all of us, and the rhetoric of white supremacy only fuels these radical ideologies. But that is the point of their performative cruelty: to divide this country. Donald Trump and his Republican stooges worked tirelessly to build hate within their base to further that goal. And they’ll do anything and hurt anyone to keep building it.”
