Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) released the following statement regarding the FCC’s announcement of a new proposal that, if adopted, would compel the agency to begin investigating if the disclosure of AI-generated content in political ads on radio and TV should be a requirement:
“Misinformation and disinformation continue to pose a serious threat to the integrity of our elections and democracies around the world. The 2024 election is around the corner, and due to a lack of congressional action, there has been little to stem the tide of deceptive AI-generated content that could potentially mislead the American people. Thankfully, the Biden Administration is taking proactive measures to protect our democracy from the dangers posed by bad actors.
“I applaud the FCC and Chairwoman Rosenworcel for proposing disclosure requirements for AI-generated political ads on broadcast TV and radio. Now, Congress must act, as current laws haven’t kept pace with AI’s rapid development. This is particularly important due to the frequent spread of misinformation online, which is why I introduced the REAL Political Ads Act to ensure disclosure requirements for AI-generated content in online ads. I’m committed to working with colleagues to pass commonsense disclosure laws for AI-generated content in political ads and establish clear standards for identifying deepfakes and other synthetic content.”
