Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) released the following statement regarding her vote against H.R.6090, the Antisemitism Awareness Act:
“There is a dire need to address the vile antisemitism confronting Jewish Americans across our nation, and Congress has a duty to pursue legislative solutions centered in their safety and ability to live peacefully and without fear. But the Antisemitism Awareness Act is no such answer. This inherently divisive bill not only undermines President Biden’s comprehensive and proven National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism, but creates dangerous opportunities for bad actors to attack free speech on an unprecedented scale. Make no mistake: Congress must take the rising scourge of antisemitism seriously and deliver decisive results that confront this crisis of hatred head on. Political ploys and patronization will never be the path forward. While the president’s strategy continues to deliver tangible differences in Jewish lives, Congress must pass meaningful legislation like the Countering Antisemitism Act that complements and supports President Biden’s work – not impede it at every turn.”
