Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) released the below statement on the new proposal from the Federal Communications Commission to recognize robocalls made with AI-generated voices as illegal and provide new tools to State Attorneys General to take legal action against bad actors behind voice cloning scams.
“Time and time again, countless Americans nationwide are inundated with robocall scams, costing consumers billions of dollars per year. As we stand on the precipice of a new technological age, empowered by AI tools, it’s clear that the federal government must do more to protect consumers from the inherent dangers posed by bad actors’ use of voice cloning technology,” said Rep. Clarke.
“I applaud the FCC and Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel in their efforts to not only protect consumers from new and emerging technologies, but also working to empower states with the tools necessary to go after the individuals behind these nefarious scams. I look forward to continuing my work with my colleagues in the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce and alongside the administration in this increasingly critical space.”
